Taking care of your Silhouette frames and lenses during the Coronavirus outbreak

Hygiene is a hot topic in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has become extremely important to follow certain precautions to prevent the spread of infection. As well as rigorous handwashing and wearing face masks to protect the mouth and nose, it’s also hugely important to thoroughly clean everyday items. So, what’s the best way to clean and disinfect your glasses so they remain as hygienic as possible whilst the virus is at large? The Silhouette International team has come up with a handy guide on how to care for Silhouette frames and lenses along with some considerations when using disinfectants.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CLEANING YOUR SILHOUETTE GLASSES WITH DISINFECTANTS
  • 1. Alcohol-based disinfectants. Conventional disinfectants contain diluted alcohol to eliminate bacteria and viruses. These types of disinfectants do not damage Silhouette frames in any way. However, they can damage prescription lenses and sunglass lenses made from polycarbonate. We therefore recommend that you do not spray and clean Silhouette glasses with alcohol-based disinfectants. Having said that, it’s fine to give the glasses a quick wipe (maximum 30 seconds) with an alcohol-based disinfectant.
  • 2. Ethanol / ethyl alcohol and isopropanol. Opticians regularly use these chemicals as cleaning substances. We recommend that you only use them sparingly to clean polycarbonate lenses as they may cause the polycarbonate to crack. They should only be used to quickly wipe clean prescription lenses, sunglass lenses and Silhouette frames for a maximum of 30 seconds.
Attached is a quick guide for cleaning Silhouette frames and lenses, which includes an overview of materials and suggested applications of cleaning solutions.
